The Sphinx

A message timestamped far further back in time than thought possible

A great limestone lion—claimed to be 4500 years old—faces the sunrise of the spring equinox. The last time the sun rose from the constellation of Leo on the spring equinox was 10,000 to 8,000 years ago.

Both the Sphinx and its enclosure are eroded by rain. The last period of frequent rainfall in Egypt was 7,000 years ago. Without maintenance, the Sphinx is quickly buried in sand.

Ancient people, whether hunter-gatherers or not, may have been capable of organizing and building on a much larger scale, using much greater knowledge, in a much more distant past than we currently think.

If our civilization crumbled today, what would be left in 10,000 years?
