How a natural catastrophe of biblical proportions gave birth to the God of Thunder

The sudden cooling of Earth 12,000 years ago was caused by meteorites from the Taurid belt. Viewed from Earth, they appear to originate from the constellation of Taurus.

The stories of thunder and sky gods across the world, from Thor to Yahweh, may depict this biblically violent event. The heavens roared like thunder when stones as bright as the sun set fire to whole continents, crushed into ice caps, and flooded the Earth.

Most thunder gods have Taurus as their symbol, possess a weapon with etymological roots connected to words for thunder, (sky)stone and hammer, and have a serpent withholding water as their arch-enemy. The thunder/sky god slays the serpent with burning stones, releasing the flow of water in the process.

To this day, we pass through the Taurid belt twice a year with no protection—in the beginning of summer and near Halloween. Stories of thunder gods might be 12, 000 year old warnings: "Look up!"
